Inspiration…

It’s Friday again, and I couldn’t think of a better way to start this year’s Feeling Friday with something I want to share with all of you, something worthy of admiration, a true inspiration that moves a city just by making believe… I am talking about a local tradition in Irapuato, Guanajuato, my hometown. In Mexico our holiday traditions are not done after New Year, on January 6th we celebrate “The Three Wise Men Day” (also known as The Three Magi or Día de Los Reyes Magos) a day where we remember when the Three Wise Men, Melchor, Gaspar, and Balthazar followed the star of Bethlehem all the way to Jerusalem to meet Baby Jesus, bringing him treasured gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. As a representation of this, on January 5th the children put one of their shoes under the tree waking up on the 6th with gifts from The Three Wise Men. Also on the 6th, we get together to eat a pastry called the King’s Ring (Rosca de Reyes), a tradition brought by the Spaniards, which is an oval shaped pastry decorated with dried fruits symbolizing the gems of the kings’ crowns. It is baked with hidden small figurines from Baby Jesus remembering the moment when the Holy Family needed to hide Baby Jesus to save him from King Herod. So each person of the family cuts the pastry and whoever gets the figurine has found God… and also he or she must be the host of another celebration on February 2nd: Candle Mass Day, and serve tamales and hot chocolate to all the guests.

So after I told you all of this, I want to share my hometown’s tradition. It all started by a family, who wanted to make dreams come true. Some years ago the Alfaro family, began by dressing up as The Three Wise Men, visiting families to give presents to their children and traveling the streets of Irapuato as a way of giving the people some hope and inspiration. Over the years, this turned out into a magical parade, which now involves around 500 people who work together to give the children of Irapuato a chance to meet their dream: to see The Three Wise Men. The parade comes to life thanks to all the people who donate their work, effort, and money, and lend their trailers to create the amazing decorations which inspire the history of the born of Baby Jesus. It takes months of organization (for some even a whole year), and 4 days to decorate all the trailers. At the end of the parade, The Three Wise Men appear filling the streets of Irapuato, with joy and happiness. After the parade is finished, The Three Magi, go to hospitals, and shelters, and visit the terminally ill children to deliver presents, giving them a night they will never forget. Also, they get hired by some families to give the presents to their children as well, and they use this money to buy more presents, and to cover some of the expenses incurred during the parade. Everything is done just for the love of the city and its children, which is the amazing part, this family created an extraordinary tradition that has become part of peoples’ lives. So, I want to take this chance to thank this impressive family for giving us, 250,000 people, a night we all look forward every year, a night full of wonderful memories that give this city an inspiration to aspire. Thank you for making this day exceptional, you do bring magic to the children and to adults, which most of the times are the ones who need magic to believe that the world is still a great place; so you make the impossible possible in one night. Es viernes otra vez, y no pude pensar en otra mejor manera de empezar este primer Feeling Friday del año, con una cosa que quiero compartir con ustedes, algo digno de admiración, una verdadera inspiración que mueve una ciudad sólo por hacer creer. Estoy hablando de una tradición local en Irapuato, Guanajuato, my ciudad natal. En México, nuestras fiestas no terminan después de Año Nuevo; el día 6 de Enero celebramos el Día de Reyes, un día en el que recordamos cuando los Tres Reyes Magos: Melchor, Gaspar y Baltazar, siguieron la estrella de Belén hasta Jerusalem para conocer al niño Dios, llevándole tres regalos: oro, incienso y mirra. Como representación de esto, el 5 de Enero por la noche, los niños dejan su zapato debajo del árbol para despertar el 6 con regalos de los Reyes Magos. También el día 6, nos juntamos en familia para comer la Rosca de Reyes, una tradición que nos dejaron los españoles, la cual es una rosca ovalada decorada con frutos secos que simbolizan las piedras preciosas de las coronas de los Reyes. Es horneada con pequeñas figuras del Niño Dios escondidas, que representan cuando La Sagrada Familia tuvo que esconder al Niño Dios para salvarlo del Rey Herodes. Entonces, cada persona de la familia parte un pedazo de rosca y si sale el figurín del Niño Dios quiere decir que ha encontrado a Dios… además esta persona debe invitar a su casa a todos los presentes el día 2 de Febrero, Día de la Candelaria, para servir tamales y chocolate caliente por tradición.

Ahora bien, después de contarles todo esto, quiero compartir con ustedes la tradición de mi ciudad natal. Todo empezó por una familia que quería hacer sueños realidad. Hace algunos años, la familia Alfaro, comenzó visitando casas y paseando por las calles de Irapuato para llevar regalos a los niños y dar a la gente algo de esperanza e inspiración. Después de tiempo, esto se ha convertido en una cabalgata que ahora involucra alrededor de 500 personas que se juntan a trabajar para darle una oportunidad a los niños de conocer su sueño: ver a los Reyes Magos. La Cabalgata toma vida gracias a todas las personas que donan su trabajo, esfuerzo y dinero, y prestan sus trailers para ser decorados enseñando la historia del nacimiento de Jesús. La organización lleva alrededor de 4 meses (para algunos el año completo) y toma 3 ó 4 días para decorar todos los trailers. Al final del desfile, aparecen los Reyes Magos, llenando de felicidad y alegría las calles de Irapuato. Cuando el desfile termina, los Tres Reyes Magos, visitan hospitales, albergues y niños con enfermedades terminales para entregarles sus regalos y darles una noche que jamás olvidarán. Además son contratados por algunas familias para que les lleven los regalos a sus hijos, y con ese dinero puedan comprar más regalos y cubrir algunos de los gastos que se incurren durante el desfile. Todo se hace por amor a la ciudad y a los niños, que es la mejor parte, esta familia ha creado una tradición extraordinaria que se ha convertido en parte de nuestras vidas. Es por esto, que quiero aprovechar este Feeling Friday, para darle las gracias a esta maravillosa familia que nos regala una noche que esperamos año con año, una noche llena de grandes recuerdos que le dan a esta ciudad una gran inspiración a seguir. Muchas gracias por hacer de este día, un día excepcional, realmente traen la magia para los niños y también los adultos, quienes la mayoría de las veces somos los que más necesitamos creer que el mundo sigue siendo grandioso; gracias por hacer lo imposible posible. ¿Como se sienten este viernes? Yo me siento orgullosa… orgullosa de esta hermosa familia, de mi ciudad y de mi gente.
